Woman charged after hitting three students outside Van Horn High School

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City woman was charged Saturday morning after driving an SUV into a crowd and hitting three students outside of Van Horn High School.

According to charging documents, Keona Kiara Nicole Smith faces three counts of first-degree endangering the welfare of a child creating substantial risk, one count of second-degree assault, and one count of driving while intoxicated resulting in physical injury.

Court records said that just after 3 p.m. on Friday, October 4, students at Van Horn High School were being dismissed when a GMC Acadia, driven by Smith, started moving toward a large group of students.

A School Resource Officer (SRO) told law enforcement they saw Smith leave the faculty parking lot, drive over a curb into a grassy area, and continue slowly through a crowd of students.

According to the probable cause statement, multiple people were yelling at Smith in an attempt to stop her. However, she continued through the crowds, hitting three students, one of which received minor injuries.
