Fire Station No. 9 at 2 South 14th Street in Kansas City, Kansas (Wyandotte County) was constructed in 1911. On September 5, 1985, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The building was also known as the Prescott Neighborhood Center.
The building was listed on the Register of Historic Kansas Places on July 3, 1979, and designated as a Kansas Historic Landmark on June 16, 1983.
The new Fire Station No. 9 is at 1100 Central Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas. The old station houses the Community Housing of Wyandotte County.
William E. Harris, an architect, designed Fire Station Nos. 8 and 9. Fire Station No. 8 was razed in 1984 because of arson damage.
By 1950, the station’s front doors were widened to accommodate larger fire engines. In 1967, the fire station ceased operating after the new station was in place. It was thereafter used for storage until it was converted into a community center for the neighborhood in 1975-1976.
The building’s architecture was expected or influenced by popular designs in the early 1900s. Its design could be an example of Eclecticism in architecture, which was popular then. This historic station was built in the Grandview neighborhood of Kansas City, Kansas which was beginning to develop in 1886 (that neighborhood may not exist anymore or go by another name).
