Kansas City man charged in smash-and-grab burglary at Brookside wine bar

A Kansas City man has been charged with burglary after allegedly breaking into a Brookside wine bar over the weekend.

Evan A. Werts, 36, allegedly broke into Vita’s Place, 5514 Oak St., in the early hours of March 30 and stole cash and merchandise, according to court documents. Along with second-degree burglary, Werts was charged Wednesday in Jackson County court with first-degree property damage and two counts of stealing.

Vita’s Place owner Ryan Sciara contacted Kansas City police around 9:30 a.m. after going to open the wine bar and seeing that the glass front door had been smashed, according to court documents.
