First Warn Forecast: Isolated to scattered showers expected throughout Sunday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – The gloomy day continues with temperatures in the low to mid-60s. Most areas will stay dry throughout the day, but you may need a jacket as you head out later, as temperatures will be on the cooler side.

Sunday, a First Warn is in place as isolated to scattered showers will develop early in the morning and continue to move through the area. Another round of showers could be possible by the early afternoon hours before drying out in the evening.

A First Warn Weather Day is in place on Monday as strong to severe storms are possible. Currently, most of the viewing area is under a level 3 out of 5 for severe storms. There are several different scenarios that could happen for Monday’s severe weather potential:

  1. The cap, or the ability for a thunderstorm to grow in the atmosphere, has weakened according to the sounds of the atmosphere compared to yesterday. Which means if storms can overcome the cap in the atmosphere Monday afternoon, the storms will have a higher chance of becoming severe and being a supercell or a stand-alone storm capable of producing a tornado, damaging winds, and hail.
  2. The second scenario is that storms are not able to overcome the cap in the atmosphere, and it is a hot afternoon. By the evening hours, a cold front will move through the area, and along this cold front, shower and storm activity will increase, becoming widespread. This line of activity could be on the strong/severe side, but the severe weather threat will decrease compared to storms popping up in the afternoon hours. These storms overnight will pose a threat for damaging winds and hail.
  3. Or the last case, if we have storms in the afternoon bringing in the threat for tornadoes and another wave of strong to severe storms overnight along the cold front.

Regardless of what plays out, please have several ways of getting watches and warnings.

Please stay tuned to the forecast as we continue to monitor this potentially dangerous day. We will be monitoring this situation, and things will become clearer as we see how the atmosphere, the cap, is on Monday…
