Kansas City man faces charges after Highway 35 traffic stop

A Kansas City man was charged with multiple offenses, including felony possession of a controlled substance, following a June 28 traffic stop along Interstate 35 in Clinton County, Missouri.

According to the probable cause statement filed by Trooper B. Hahn of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Derek Laverne Jacobson, 40, was stopped at approximately 5:47 p.m. near the 47-mile marker for exceeding the posted speed limit. During the stop, Jacobson disclosed that he did not have vehicle insurance and admitted to operating the vehicle without a valid driver’s license. A records check confirmed that his driving privileges expired in 2019.

Trooper Hahn observed that Jacobson appeared unusually nervous and admitted to prior methamphetamine use. When asked directly, Jacobson acknowledged he was in possession of a glass smoking pipe containing methamphetamine residue. The trooper conducted a probable cause search and located five baggies containing approximately one gram of methamphetamine.
