Lenexa adding more AI traffic signal systems at intersections across the city

LENEXA, Kan (KCTV) – This week, the Lenexa City Council approved an expansion of an AI traffic signal system across the city. The city has been testing the system at the 87th Parkway and Quivira Road intersection for a few years now.

“It’s really a vehicle detection system we’re using,” said Steve Schooley, Lenexa’s Transportation Manager. “It uses a combination of cameras and radar to detect the vehicles. It also provides us with traffic count data that we can retrieve from the system, so we know the exact volume of traffic that’s traveled through that intersection from one day to the next or one week to the next. We can also go back to look at video and see if there have been some issues with traffic backing up or is the detection system actually working correctly.”

Schooley says the AI uses the combination of video and radar to determine whether a vehicle is waiting, and it will change the light, as well as help coordinate their lights in the city.
