Independence attorney sentenced to prison for $795K tax evasion scheme

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – An Independence attorney will spend the next 21 months in prison for a tax evasion scheme that resulted in a nearly $795,000 loss.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri says that on Monday, July 14, John C. Carnes, 70, was sentenced to nearly 2 years in prison for tax evasion.

Court documents noted that in November 2024, Carnes pleaded guilty to evading payment of nearly $795,000 in income taxes. He was ordered to pay that same amount in restitution…
