One week after his death, Deputy Elijah Ming’s legacy lives on through a backpack giveaway

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) – A week after Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Deputy Elijah Ming was killed in the line of duty, the community he served came together not just to grieve — but to give.

On Saturday, Kansas City, Kansas police officers and sheriff’s deputies handed out more than 700 free backpacks to local students, continuing a tradition Deputy Ming deeply believed in: investing in the next generation.

“This is what Ming stood for,” said KCK Police Chief Karl Oakman. “He wouldn’t have wanted us to stop doing this. This year, we did it in his honor — because he believed in taking care of the community, always helping out others.”…
