Blood drive celebrates Kansas City leader and attack survivor’s 90th birthday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – In March, an 89-year-old Kansas City leader was violently attacked. Thanks to help from people who didn’t even know her, she not only survived, but recovered to continue her work serving others.

Joanne M. Collins was the first Black Kansas City, Missouri, Councilwoman. She’s served the community for decades.

After she was attacked in March, she underwent emergency surgery, receiving 5 units of donated blood from generous strangers. Without them, she may not have made it.

Ms. Collins is now encouraging others to step up and save a life through blood donations in celebration of her 90th birthday this month…
