We the People: Preserving & growing Kansas City’s black cowboys, cowgirls

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Kansas City native Rex Purefoy is preserving the history of black cowboys and passing it on to future generations.

After the Civil War, many enslaved people found opportunities as cowboys in Kansas City and parts of Missouri.

Although it’s a part of history that’s often overlooked, Purefoy says he wanted to change that.

Rex Purefoy is Kansas City’s own, “Hollywood Cowboy”. He was inducted into the National Cowboys of Color Museum and Hall of Fame on August 24, 2007. The Museum and Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have contributed to Western culture and tradition and play a part in keeping this important piece of American history alive…
