Nationwide — An online special library called The Quiet House Library, has been launched that focuses on the black experience. The need for realistic, interesting and validating literature is still evading the black community. The main reason is because of the lack of representation in our local libraries to encourage the purchasing of black literature which is written by black authors and illustrated by black illustrators and the banning of some of the books written by black authors which highlight racial matters.
An unscientific polling of black literature available in various local libraries indicated that there aren’t many children’s books available that portray black main characters, only if they are purchased at a bookstore.
The average children’s book costs about $10 to $19 and as their reading level increases the more they read and the more they age. What becomes of those books that have been read? The Quiet House Library provides books for all ages so as the child grows they can choose books that are of interest to them in their age group/grade level.
