Missouri soldier killed in WWII prison camp to be laid to rest in Kansas City 82 years later

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – A Missouri soldier, who was one of thousands killed in a Japanese internment camp in the Philippines during World War II, is finally expected to be laid to rest in Kansas City.

The Defense Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Accounting Agency announced on Friday, Sept. 5, that it officially briefed the family of U.S. Army Sgt. Simon Garelick, of St. Joseph, who was 22 at the time of his death.

Agency leaders noted that Sgt. Garelick was captured and died as a prisoner of war during World War II. He was accounted for on Oct. 7, 2024.

The U.S. Army indicated that Garelick was a member of the Headquarters Company, Philippines Department. He was in the Philippines during World War II when Japanese forces invaded in December 1941…
