KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Nine hundred workers are being laid off at a General Motors (GM) plant in Kansas City, Kansas, as of Wednesday, Oct. 1.
GM announced that the indefinite layoff at the Fairfax Assembly plant in KCK comes after plans to invest around $4 billion back in June of this year. Now, the company says it’s delaying the second phase of its shift to produce the Chevrolet Equinox at Fairfax Assembly.

“Fairfax Assembly will support production of the gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox beginning in mid-2027. Sales of the recently redesigned Equinox were up more than 30% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2025,” GM said in a news release back in June.
“Fairfax remains on track to begin building the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV by the end of this year. GM expects to make new future investments in Fairfax for GM’s next generation of affordable EVs.”…
