Kansas City Man Arrested After Firing Gunshots Into Room Where Children Were Sleeping

KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI — A 63-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly firing multiple gunshots into a Kansas City family’s apartment — including the bedroom where two young children were asleep, according to court documents filed in Jackson County Circuit Court.

Family Awakened by Gunfire

Authorities say the shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at an apartment complex less than a month after the victims had moved in. The father told investigators he and his wife were asleep when they were startled by gunfire. Moments later, he heard a dozen more shots fired and rushed to grab his two sleeping sons, diving to the floor for cover.

Responding officers found bullet holes in the west wall of the children’s bedroom. Police could also hear the suspect, later identified as Douglas Pinegar, yelling from the neighboring apartment before he was taken into custody.

Suspect’s Mental Health Claim

When police entered Pinegar’s apartment, they discovered a handgun with no serial number, several spent shell casings, and visible gunshot damage.

During questioning, Pinegar allegedly told detectives he was suffering from a psychotic episode brought on by a new prescription medication. He claimed he believed he was dead and fired the gun “to make sure everything was real.” Investigators said he denied intending to harm anyone.

Charges and Court Proceedings

Pinegar has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action. If convicted, he could face up to 30 years in prison
