The Kansas City Public Library is observing Native American Heritage Month in November. The Library is recognizing the history and contributions of Indigenous peoples in the region. The Library’s service area is on the ancestral lands of several tribes. These include the Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo), Osage, Kaw (Kansa), Missouria, Shawnee, Wyandot, and Očeti Šakówiŋ (Sioux). Native American influences are present in Kansas City, such as in street names and museum exhibits.
To mark the month, the Library is offering reading lists, films, and educational resources about Indigenous history and culture. Patrons can access eBooks through hoopla or Libby. Documentaries about Native experiences are available on the Kanopy streaming service.
A special event will take place on November 18, 2025, at the Plaza Branch. Kansas author Laurie Dove will discuss her debut novel. The book features Carrie Starr, a tribal marshal investigating a disappearance on an Oklahoma reservation. The story addresses crime rates affecting Native communities…
