Kansas City Woman Receives First Iris Transplant in Missouri at MU Health Care

When Jennifer Sanders experienced a traumatic injury to her right eye in 2010, it changed her life in some ways, but not in others.

She became shy around other people, wanting to avoid the stares and questions about the visible damage that destroyed 95% of her iris. The injury did not interrupt her work as a professional courier — her vision was still clear; she just needed sunglasses all the time to control the amount of light entering her eye.

“Every day I looked in the mirror, I saw what happened to me,” Jennifer said. “Every day, several times a day, I was reminded of the past. I didn’t make eye contact with people at all.”…
