Seniors, instructors left in limbo after sudden closure of no-cost community centers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) -Three Optum Community Center locations around the Kansas City metro closed with very little warning for clients.

Optum’s locations in Kansas City, Shawnee and the Northland could be seen with closed signs posted on the front doors on December 18.

The locations provide a space for adults 55+ to stay connected with physical fitness classes, planned activities, and wellness groups.

The closures came as a shock to clients who arrived on Thursday for classes and those on the schedule to teach. Many running the classes were contracted vendors who were notified Wednesday night of the closure, according to a yoga instructor who placed his business card on the door next to the closed sign.

“My husband and I were both absolutely devastated,” said Patricia Barrett, who calls the Midtown Optum location her second home. “Essentially, we came every day.”…
