Food banks prepare for increased demand following SNAP changes

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Food banks across the Kansas City area are preparing for increased demand in 2026 as SNAP eligibility changes and grant cuts reduce resources available to low-income residents.

Harvesters, a regional food bank, is facing challenges as some grants are not coming through, paired with more clients due to new barriers for SNAP benefits that started in November. The changes include tighter work requirements and narrower eligibility for the federal food assistance program.
