The Choice is Yours,” this series aims to shed light on those who follow in Powell’s footsteps, showcasing their commitment to making a difference. Bernard Powell, a prominent Black community activist born in 1947 in Kansas City, serves as a powerful example of what it means to lead with purpose.
Powell’s journey began at a young age, as he became involved in civil rights work, joining the NAACP at just 13 years old and marching alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to Selma, Alabama. He later became the regional director of the Congress of Racial Equality and co-founded the Social Action Committee of 20 (SAC-20) in 1968, which focused on teaching Black youth essential leadership and job training skills.
