Jackson County executive responds to wrongful termination lawsuit

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Jackson County Executive Phil Levota said he will not settle a wrongful termination lawsuit filed by the county’s former director of assessment, calling the claims frivolous.

Gail McCann Beatty filed the lawsuit claiming the county fired her because she refused to break the law. She objected to rolling back property tax assessments and capping commercial property tax increases.

McCann Beatty, who had served as the county’s director of assessment since July 2018, was removed from her position on Nov. 5, 2025.

In November, Levota gave her an ultimatum to resign within 24 hours or get fired…
