‘We got the beet:’ Alternative ice solutions to be tested this weekend

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Missouri University of Science and Technology will be testing out alternative solutions to salt on campus this weekend as part of a 2-year $450,000 study funded by MODOT.

When it comes to treating icy roads, Missouri already boasts, “we got the beet.” Last year, MODOT spent more than $64-million dollars clearing roads of snow and ice using 160,000 tons of salt and 2.1 million gallons of salt brine. But it also used 229-thousand gallons of beet juice.

“Not many states use it. The one that has used it a lot is North Dakota, followed only second by Missouri,” Dr. Kamal Khayat, Missouri S&T Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation, said…
