KC man gets 32 years in murder-for-hire and firearm case

A Kansas City, Missouri, man has received a combined federal prison sentence of 32 years after convictions tied to a murder-for-hire conspiracy, illegal firearm possession, and violations of prior federal supervision.

Thomas D. Clegg, 42, was sentenced in federal court by U.S. District Judge Beth Phillips to 30 years in prison without parole for participating in a conspiracy to commit murder for hire and for being a felon in possession of a firearm. In a separate ruling, the court imposed an additional two-year sentence for violating the terms of supervised release connected to a prior 2012 federal firearm conviction. Court records show the conspiracy and weapons offenses occurred while Clegg was serving that supervised release term. The judge ordered each sentence to run consecutively, resulting in a total term of 32 years in federal custody.

According to evidence presented in court, Clegg and multiple co-conspirators engaged in a paid murder plot targeting a victim identified in court documents as “J.C.” as well as members of that individual’s family.
