KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Some Missouri lawmakers are trying to make sure people renting out their homes to World Cup travelers later this summer don’t get hit with a big property tax surprise. It already happened to some Jackson County homeowners last year.Because of the 2025 controversy, the issue seems to be decided in Jackson County, at least for this year, after the Jackson County Legislature passed a clarifying ordinance through 2027. However, leaders say this is about protecting people in other counties and some homeowners say it’s about protecting their futures.

Laura Williams has listed Kansas City homes for short-term rental since 2019. Last year, she got a bill from Jackson County informing her property had been reclassified from residential to commercial.
“The problem with it was the commercial taxes were so egregious it was literally taking a property that had a $2,000 bill to like $7,000 or a property that had a $5,000 tax bill to like $15,000.”
“That is the frustration. These homes are short-term rentals. They are zoned residential; they are built and financed as homes. They are sold on the residential market.
