An Independence, Missouri, man has been sentenced in federal court after admitting to tax evasion involving both federal and state obligations.
Michael Robert Jett, 60, appeared before U.S. District Court Judge Douglas Harpool and received a sentence of 23 months in prison, followed by 3 years of post-release supervision. In addition to the custodial sentence, the court ordered Jett to pay $361,078.81 in restitution.
According to federal authorities, Jett worked as a salesperson for a timeshare company and falsely claimed exemption from paying federal and state income taxes. As a result of that claim, his employer did not withhold taxes from his wages.
