UG commissioner explains concern with residency requirement lift

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The residency requirement for Unified Government (UG) of Wyandotte County employees has been lifted. The commission voted to remove the requirement at a meeting on Thursday night at City Hall.

Mayor and UG CEO Christal Watson broke the tie. It was 5-5, and because of that, she had to vote as the 11th person, lifting the requirement. Watson says it’s time for the county to be more progressive.

“We can’t do that if you still have that stigma of folks that don’t want to live in Wyandotte County, and that you get within the metropolitan area,” she said on Friday…
