KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) – On Thursday, the Unified Government Board of Commissioners voted to lift residency requirements for UG employees. KCK Mayor/CEO Christal Watson broke the tie with a yes vote.
“It was important we did the right thing,” said Watson, when speaking on her yes vote to KCTV 5 on Friday. “The numbers spoke and I could not overlook that.”
The residency requirement has been a topic of debate for months among the commission, with residents voicing their opinions during public comment in meetings. At Thursday’s meeting, UG staff shared research into the policy, including results from surveys to UG employees and the community.
