Gladstone parks department uses robot to paint athletic field lines

GLADSTONE, Mo. (KCTV) -A GPS-guided robot is painting field lines at Happy Rock Park, reducing what used to take a crew of six people up to seven hours to just 22 minutes for a single large soccer field.

The Gladstone Parks and Recreation Department is using the robot, named Frank, to paint lines on athletic fields. Athletic Field Specialist Benjamin Sprink said one person can run the operation by setting up a GPS tower, building the field layout on a tablet and letting the robot do the rest.

“Well, my first reaction was… robots. I mean, I knew it was coming one day and I wasn’t sure that time was now, but when we saw it for the first time, it was glorious,” Sprink said.

How the robot works

The robot runs on GPS technology. A tower registers the land coordinates, which connect to a tablet where staff build the field layout. The robot then paints the field based on those specifications…
