Memorial at Kansas cemetery honors Colored Troops sergeant, Black Union Civil War veteran

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – A memorial service was held Saturday to honor the legacy of a Black Civil War veteran from Kansas City who fought for the Union during the Civil War.

A headstone for soldier Charles Graves was installed at Maple Hill Cemetery Saturday morning. His burial site was unmarked for over a century.

Graves served as a sergeant in Company H of the 65th Regiment and Company C of the 67th Regiment of the United States Colored Troops.

Multiple generations of his descendants were at the memorial Saturday, paying their respects to a long-forgotten military hero…
