Six Fort Bend County district judges last week rejected a performance-based compromise between County Judge Daniel Wong and District Judge Christian Becerra that could have preserved three associate judge positions set to lose funding Jan. 1.
Wong was willing to compromise. He and Becerra reached a tentative agreement that would have kept the three associate judge positions for another year while the courts worked to meet agreed-upon performance benchmarks. The results would then be reviewed during next year’s budget discussions.
Becerra’s fellow district judges rejected that approach and instead issued a sharply worded response telling commissioners to “stay in your lane.”…
