“We’re definitely going to try to end the series on Sunday” – Patrick Ewing didn’t treat Game 6 of the 1994 Finals as a must-win

The 1994 NBA Finals was a seesaw affair between the Houston Rockets and New York Knicks, with the Rockets eventually coming out on top. It also featured a battle between two of the greatest centers ever, Patrick Ewing and Hakeem Olajuwon.

New York had two chances of clinching the championship after taking Game 5 to go up 3-2. Unfortunately, the team couldn’t get the job done.

“I’m not going to say it’s a must-win,” Ewing said going into Game 6, ” but we’re definitely going to try to end the series on Sunday.”

Buckling under pressure

Like all of the games in the series, Games 6 and 7 were nail-biters, with the final scores having margins of two and six points, respectively.

In the sixth contest, the Rockets looked on their way to winning somewhat comfortably, leading 46-36 at the half. But the Knicks rallied in the third period to trail by three points entering the fourth. They couldn’t steal the win on the road, though, as Olajuwon blocked John Stark’s potential championship-clinching 3-point attempt in the waning seconds.
