Fort Bend County to repurpose $6.2 million in federal grant funds

The county southwest of Houston held a public hearing Monday to discuss projects funded by its Community Development Block Grants – money that is given to the county through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). In 2022 and 2023, HUD found that the county’s community development department was not compliant with its timeliness requirements for spending the awarded funds.

Fort Bend County could reallocate more than $6 million in unused federal funding for public safety, infrastructure and social services.

The county southwest of Houston held a public hearing Monday to discuss projects funded by its Community Development Block Grants – money that is given to the county through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Since 2020, HUD has authorized more than $17 million in the grant funds for the county.

After several previously planned projects were canceled, the remaining, unused grant funds total about $11.4 million, and the county is looking to repurpose about $6.2 million for public safety and infrastructure projects. It also plans to invest more than $537,000 from its 2024 Community Development Block Grant in public services…
