If you drive on Houston highways, you’ve probably noticed some sections of concrete feel or sound different. Those lines etched in the road serve a purpose.

Grooves added to some sections of the state’s highway system help reduce noise for drivers, but that’s not their main job, says Texas Department of Transportation spokesperson Leonardo Flores.
