Sugar Land acquires historic Imperial Historic District site

SUGAR LAND, Texas (KIAH) – The City of Sugar Land makes history, after acquiring the city’s iconic Imperial Historic District, including the Char House. It’s the first time in history that the city owns the historic 40-acre site.

City leaders have been trying for 20 years and called the purchase a turning point to preserve and revitalize the heart of Sugar Land’s identity. The site’s redevelopment, once home of Imperial Sugar refinery, was delayed for a long time by undisclosed issues. At one time, Imperial Sugar, one was one of the longest-operating businesses in Texas that helped establish Sugar Land as a community, employing generations of community residents and shaping the city’s culture and economy. The district served as a hub of work, housing, and community life along Oyster Creek.

The site once home of Imperial Sugar refinery, has aged without upkeep and its redevelopment, delayed for a long time by undisclosed issues. Now that wait is over…
