Woman surrenders after long standoff on North Freeway

HOUSTON (KIAH) — A woman sitting in the middle of the North Freeway led to a five-hour standoff Thursday that shut down traffic in both directions.

The Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office said the woman was involved in a minor fender bender around 12:30 p.m. on the northbound lanes of I-45 near Cypresswood Drive.

Constable said she then got out of her car and sat down on a lawn chair in the main lanes while armed with a handgun. The suspect refused to comply with verbal commands and kept holding the weapon.

She eventually surrendered around 6:30 p.m. after hours of negotiations. Constables believe she was suffering some kind of mental health crisis.

There is no word of any charges that the woman will face in the incident…
