School traffic enforcement in Fort Bend ISD neighborhood lacking, some parents say

HOUSTON (KIAH) — Right inside Discovery Cove neighborhood in Fort Bend County, parents will notice Schiff Elementary School. A few weeks ago, District Attorney Investigators from the Fort Bend District Attorney’s Office patrolled crosswalks for extra traffic enforcement during the first week of school.

Despite the enforcement at the front of the school, some parents that live in a newer neighborhood towards the back of the campus say that there’ a bigger issue. One dad, who prefers to keep his name anonymous said, “at this point, I should be able to just walk them. As you can see, I live right here on this street and the school is right there.”

As of now, the structure of the directed school traffic leads into the neighbor, causing safety concerns for parents who have children that walk to school. The back neighborhood still has construction with no sidewalks, no crossing guards and no crossing guards. “At the very last minute, the school changes decision to send every single parent and every traffic here divert traffic through our entire neighborhood,” the dad said. “This was done because this is a brand new development. It’s a new street. There weren’t houses here six months ago.”

In an email from Schiff Elementary School’s Principal, Tiffany Agina, temporary options for students to get to school include:

  • Walking through the grass
  • Use an alternate walking route for families in the outside circle or use the car rider drop-off and pick-up
