A Houston-based civil rights group is joining other Texas collectives to fight GOP efforts to push Democratic lawmakers who broke quorum out of office.
OCA-Greater Houston—an AAPI advocacy group—League of Women voters of Texas, Asian Texas for Justice, Unidos US and the Texas State Conference of the NAACP filed a court brief late last week on behalf of 13 of the Texas House Democrats who fled the state in protest of congressional redistricting maps.
Since their return, the Democratic bloc, which started with more than 50 lawmakers leaving Texas, has been subject to penalties. Quorum breakers are required to pay over $9,000 in fees to cover the amount of time they were out of state, per Texas House procedures.
