Houston, Galveston and Brazoria Under Air Quality Alert: Ozone Action Day Declared

HOUSTON, TEXAS — Health officials have declared an Ozone Action Day for Houston, Galveston, and Brazoria counties Saturday as ground-level ozone pollution is expected to reach unhealthy levels despite fall-like temperatures.

Why the Alert Was Issued

Ozone, while protective high in the atmosphere, becomes harmful at ground level when sunlight interacts with emissions from vehicles, industries, and chemicals. The result is poor air quality that can worsen asthma, allergies, and other respiratory issues.

Officials say children, seniors, and people with lung or heart conditions should limit outdoor activity during the afternoon when ozone levels peak.

Tips for Staying Safe Indoors

Dr. Carlos Vital from the Vital Allergy and Asthma Center shared several steps residents can take to reduce indoor exposure during poor air quality days:

  • Turn off gas stoves if not well ventilated to prevent nitrogen dioxide buildup.
  • Avoid harsh cleaning products like bleach and scented sprays that release volatile organic compounds.
  • Reconsider burning candles, which can trigger inflammation in sensitive airways.
  • Change air filters monthly if located in walls, or every three months if ceiling-mounted.

Tracking the Air Quality

Residents are encouraged to use local monitoring tools and weather apps to track real-time air quality conditions in their neighborhood. Officials emphasize that taking precautions today can help avoid serious health flare-ups.

The alert comes as Houston continues to battle recurring air quality challenges, particularly during warm, sunny days when ozone formation intensifies…
