Houston region’s vehicle theft numbers mean higher insurance premiums for everyone, experts say

Despite seeing a 25% decline in vehicle thefts through the first half of 2025, Harris County drivers face higher car insurance rates compared to other areas of the country because of how many vehicles are stolen each year, experts say.

Harris County’s vehicle theft rate remains higher than many other places in the country, according to Nicholas Zeitlinger, spokesperson for the National Insurance Crime Bureau. And, while the overall number has been trending in a positive direction, it remains above pre-pandemic rates.

Car insurance rates nationwide have risen for several years, a trend that is expected to continue in 2025, despite experts initially predicting rates might remain flat this year, according to insurance comparison website Insurify. Texas rates are projected to increase to an average of around $2,790 per year, up from around $2,600 in June 2025, according to an Insurify study.
