Venezuelans to rally in Katy for second day while protesters of U.S. action gather in Uptown

Supporters of Venezuelan democracy and antiwar protesters are expected to gather Sunday in separate demonstrations in the Houston area, one day after the U.S. captured the nation’s president in a daring military strike.

The U.S. military operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro set off a mix of emotions over the sudden end of his authoritarian regime and the White House’s plans to run the country and tap its oil. Some Venezuelans in Katy celebrated Maduro’s capture Saturday, and Sunday will feature at least two demonstrations — one in Katy for a transition to a democratic form of government and a protest in Uptown labelling the invasion an “act of war.”

The gathering in Katy will take place at 1 p.m. in the Market Town lot at 25600 Westheimer Parkway, according to Unidad Houston, a group supporting democracy in Venezuela. The Houston area organizers demanded progress toward a democratic transition of government, the dismantling of the alleged corruption network Cartel de los Soles, the release of political prisoners and the recognition of a government led by opposition leaders Edmundo González Urrutia and María Corina Machado…
