Fire officials urge safety as freezing temperatures approach

HOUSTON — As freezing temperatures head toward the area, fire departments across the region say they expect to be busy responding to calls related to fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. Officials are urging families to take precautions now to stay safe while trying to stay warm, especially if temperatures drop or power outages occur.

Fire officials say one of the most important first steps is checking smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in the home. They recommend making sure detectors are working properly, have fresh batteries installed, and are not more than 10 years old.
