Sugar Land drivers brace for US-59 detours starting in March

Major traffic changes are coming to U.S. 59 in Sugar Land—and commuters who rely on the Brazos River Bridge should prepare for detours and heavier northbound congestion starting in March.

TxDOT will begin the next phase of construction near the Brazos River Bridge in March 2026, shifting traffic patterns on the northbound main lanes and closing access to the northbound frontage road over the river, according to the City of Sugar Land.

The work is aimed at addressing erosion near the bridge, a repair officials say is necessary now to prevent more significant disruptions later. City officials emphasized that the bridge itself remains safe and open during construction.

“We know traffic changes can be frustrating, especially for daily commuters, but these repairs are needed now to address erosion near the bridge and prevent larger disruptions in the future,” Sugar Land officials said in a Facebook post…
