‘We didn’t move here to be poisoned’: Fort Bend residents renew fight over concrete plant construction

Fort Bend County elected officials, local community organizers and members of the environment nonprofit Air Alliance held a public meeting over the weekend at a Rosharon neighborhood pavilion to voice their opposition against constructing the facility.

Fort Bend County residents, community organizers and elected officials gathered over the weekend to voice opposition to a proposed rock and concrete crushing facility planned less than two miles from several neighborhoods in the eastern section of the county.

The company, Julpit, Inc., has reapplied for an air quality permit for the fourth time, according to Air Alliance Houston’s Environmental Justice Outreach Coordinator Reem Tariq, after previous attempts were overturned last year by officials from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). Concrete crushing facilities are known to emit air pollution that could cause health concerns, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“It got to a point where there was a contested court hearing and TCEQ decided to overturn the application because community members identified deficiencies in the application,” Tariq said…
