Sugar Mill Elementary parents react to Fort Bend ISD closure vote

SUGAR LAND, Texas (CW39) – Parents in the Fort Bend Independent School District expressed anger and sadness Tuesday morning as they dropped off their children at Sugar Mill Elementary School, one of seven campuses the district’s board of trustees voted to close.

“I was bawling last night on the way home and a lot of parents were,” Ivy Nguyen said. So, we took it out last night just talked it out. We still have some resentment, but we’re kind of moving on for our kids.”

Nguyen, who has a fourth grader at Sugar Mill, said she feels betrayed by the FBISD board of trustees, which voted 4-3 Monday night to close seven elementary schools ahead of the 2026–27 school year. District leaders cited declining enrollment and a growing budget deficit.

“If it was truly the right decision, there would have been overwhelming consensus and the fact that it was a split board tells me that they weren’t all sure either and so that’s hard as well,” Molly Baker said. “There should have been very clear data, very clear numbers that this was the only path forward.”…
