In a country that seems more polarized by the day, most companies strive to remain nonpolitical to avoid alienating any customers and avoid controversy.
Then there’s Bill Penzey, Jr., owner of Penzey’s Spices, coming soon to Orlando.
“The Republicans are looking to ride a wave of racism towards immigrants to victory in November,” he wrote Sunday in one of the company’s frequent emails. “We have to stop that.”
The email was advertising the last day of the “Immigration Celebration!” sale which promised 50% off a variety of flavorings from around the world such as China Powdered Ginger, Garam Masala, Hungarian Paprika, Mexican Oregano and Vietnamese Cinnamon, “the spices that make us America!”
Every newsletter from Penzey includes deals often themed to match current events, such as the January 6 Box with three different spices including one called “Justice,” or “Transgender Remember!” with free packets of “Vanilla Sugar of Love.” They’re accompanied by a diatribe against Republican policies and sometimes a plaintive plea to get out and vote. Every shipment arrives with brightly colored stickers on and in the box and pins and magnets saying “Choose Hope,” “Embrace Hope,” “Choose Love,” “Heal the World” and other messages of encouragement.
