A U.S. Postal Service worker has been arrested for allegedly throwing away over 1,000 pieces of mail, which include political materials and an election ballot, according to federal court documents.
According to WFTV 9 News, Ottis McCoy, a mailman in Orlando, was taken into custody on Friday for stealing U.S. mail and wrongly disposing of it in a wooded area instead of delivering it as required. WFTV 9 News reported that the worker allegedly discarded over 1,000 pieces of mail, including 400 political items and at least one election ballot in an Orlando neighborhood.
A Fox 35 Orlando report acknowledged that authorities learned of the situation after a co-worker alerted McCoy’s supervisor about his early return from his delivery route. The coworker noted that McCoy had left with an unusually large amount of mail.
Upon investigation, the supervisor checked McCoy’s vehicle GPS and discovered he had made an unauthorized stop at a wooded lot, where multiple pieces of mail were found scattered around.
