Victim in Haines City shooting, a Ridge Community High grad, left behind 2-year-old son

The Haines City Police Department has identified the victim in a fatal shooting from Dec. 27 as Asiya La’Trece Roberts-Husband, a Haines City resident.

Roberts-Husband, 33, was in a vehicle that was shot from behind in darkness on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way near Avenue K. A 41-year-old woman was hospitalized, HCPD said.

Roberts-Husband, the second of 18 siblings, graduated in 2010 from Ridge Community High School. She worked at LongHorn Steakhouse in Winter Haven and assisted her mother, Elrica Roberts, at her business, Rica’s Print Pack and Ship Center in Haines City, according to a news release.

The victim leaves behind a 2-year-old son. The release included a statement from Elrica Roberts.

“Asiya had many, many friends and family that loved and adored her,” the statement said. “Her smile was beautiful and made you smile, too. She was always happy. She loved people. She always wanted to help her friends. She was helping a friend when she was taken from us.”

HCPD had previously declined to identify Roberts-Husband, citing a state law that exempts crime victims from public records releases. Her family gave permission to release her name and other information, HCPD spokesperson Brooke Hart said.
