LAKE WALES, Fla. – Early Tuesday morning, a Haitian man with a penchant for speed found himself in hot water with the law, getting arrested after blowing past a Polk County Sheriff’s deputy at nearly double the posted speed limit.

Rubenson Mercier, 25, was pulled over around 3:20 AM on July 15th after Deputy Elliott clocked his 2024 gray Honda Accord traveling at a staggering 109 mph on State Road 60 in the Lake Wales area of the River Ranch resort. The speed limit in that stretch? A mere 55 mph. Mercier was just one mile per hour shy of doubling the legal limit.

When questioned, Mercier reportedly told Deputy Elliott he was in a hurry to get to Haines City to pick up his girlfriend for work. However, his urgent romantic gesture has landed him in serious trouble…
