Orlando is putting the brakes on speeders with a new safety initiative focusing on school zones. In a unanimous decision, the Orlando City Council has approved a contract with Verra Mobility to install speed cameras in 26 designated school areas. These cameras are set directly to target those disregarding the posted speed limits and will issue citations through the mail, ranging from $100 to $158 for those captured traveling above the limit. This move, as detailed by WFTV, aims to enhance pedestrian safety, particularly for the students.
The increased presence of speed cameras comes as part of a broader plan to enable, along with the existing red light cameras at intersections, tighter traffic enforcement in areas with vulnerable pedestrian populations. “People react much better when they know they’re being watched,” Orlando Stops operations manager Raymond Rodriguez stated, as per WESH, in support of the initiative. Cameras will trigger when vehicles are detected going anything over the posted limit, with infractions to be reviewed by an officer confirming the viability of the violation.
