The Florida Department of Transportation painted over the rainbow crosswalks outside Orlando’s Pulse Nightclub on Aug. 21 after regulations passed in June, leading one UCF alumna to create a symbol to give people “a way to take action.”
In protest, people took to the streets and repainted the crosswalks with chalk to restore the LGBTQ+ flag colors. Both FDOT and community members repeatedly painted over the crosswalks, eventually leaving them painted black and white, the regular colors of a crosswalk, according to NBC News.
