Knoxville police deploy real-time surveillance cameras

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – The Knoxville Police Department has begun using real-time cameras to monitor spots in Knoxville that become the scenes of crimes. A Thursday announcement from the department confirmed KPD had begun using its Real Time Information Center (RTIC) in a limited capacity, with plans to expand.

The RTIC is located at the city’s Public Safety Complex and staffed by three people: a sergeant and two full-time, non-sworn RTIC specialists. According to Communications Manager Scott Erland, the department plans to add two more specialists to the staff.

“The Real Time Information Center (RTIC) is housed at the Public Safety Complex and brings together a network of public cameras and privately-owned cameras voluntarily registered or integrated into the RTIC to enhance public safety,” the announcement said. “The RTIC is designed to support officers in the field responding to calls for service, detectives conducting criminal investigations and situational awareness during large-scale emergencies or special events.”…
